Interview with Mon from Kill City Creeps

Nic: So, Mon, you're the drummer for the Kill City Creeps. Tell us a bit about the band.

Mon: Well its a fourpiece all from sydney, mostly the inner west. I play with Daniel, who previously was in "The Dolly Rocker Movement", Amy (aka Knives), who I've played music with since I was 13, and Nina B, a long time friend and amazing organ player.

We're inspired by 60's garage and rock and roll, iggy pop, gary glitter, t-rex etc etc....Its lots of fun

Nic: You played a gig last week at The Metro opening for The Damned. Who are they and why were you giggling so much with excitement afterwards?

Mon: The Damned are a punk goth band that are celebrating their 35th anniversary and were around the same scene as the Sex Pistols etc, and appeared on shows like The Young Ones.... So for us it was a huge honor to support them as its a band we've known about and never thought we'd see them live let alone support them! So yeah it was incredibly exciting to play these shows and be on the road, something I can't wait to do again!

Nic: Sounds like it. And it hasn't been too long since you started all playing together that things began to take off right? How did you get to where you're at now?

Mon: Yeah thats true. We've been together for about a year now, after a suggestion to have a jam together which was initiated by dan. And that jam turned into many jams and then shows and yeah a tight knit gang a jang. Haha. We've been pretty hardworking with plenty of practice and gigging which has been awesome. We also got management a few months ago and now a booking agent so it looks like everythings set to get alot more busy!

Nic: Yeah I've seen you play a few times. Not too shabby! So let's go back a few years.. Did you always want to be a drummer when you were in school or did it kinda just happen somehow?

Mon: Yeah I always loved music as a kid, and played a lot of percussion in primary school...never being classically trained, drumming just seemed like a natural choice to take. When I was thirteen I started a band with three other girlfriends (one being Amy who I play with now!) and I've been playing drums ever since...

Nic: You can play quite fast when you need to. How the hell do you concentrate and stay in that coordinated focused zone?

Mon: I guess because its something I love to do...The enjoyment from playing just makes it seem easy and fun and I get in my own little music zone... You feel like time slips away, I can play for 2 hours and feel like its only been a few minutes. Especially when you play on stage it always feels like the set is ending too soon! Drumming involves a lot of physical exertion as well so it can be very cathartic and makes me feel good because I can get everything out and just get lost in the music!

(Ps. From Nic. See some more info about how you can get In The Zone)

Nic: So what's the next step for the band?

Mon: Well we just came back from a tour in Melbourne to support The Damned, and then we've got a few gigs in the pipeline..... We're planning to record some more tunes this year aswell and do some more touring if possible. But yeah we're all pretty excited for 2012!

Nic: What are you most thankful for?

Mon: Having a rad mum that always supported my music endeavours, having amazing friends that I love playing with and can bond with on a musical level, and having the support of those around me.... It makes me strive to do my best and gives me the confidence to perform. Thanks guys!!

(Ps. from Nic again: Like this idea? Try using Thank Tank yourself)

Nic: Finally, how will you BITE BACK in 2012?

Mon: I'm going to BITE BACK by playing more often, concentrating even more on drumming and improving and honing my skills and staying positive and optimistic about the band and wherever it takes us! I'm also starting to study this year which is exciting, and I want to concentrate more on my health and living more healthily! So yeah, i am pretty amped for this year, its gunna be a big one!
